Onam is the biggest and most vibrant festival celebrated in the southern Indian state of Kerala. It marks the Malayalam New Year and is celebrated with great enthusiasm and joy by people of all communities. The festival is a harvest celebration and signifies the homecoming of the mythical King Mahabali, under whose reign Kerala is believed to have witnessed a golden era of prosperity and peace.

Onam is a ten-day festival, with each day having its own significance and unique rituals. The most important day is Thiruvonam, which is the final day of the celebration. The festivities include:

History and Significance

Onam commemorates the annual visit of King Mahabali to Kerala. According to legend, Mahabali was a benevolent and just ruler who was beloved by his subjects. However, the gods, jealous of his popularity, conspired to end his reign. Vishnu, in the form of Vamana, a dwarf Brahmin, tricked Mahabali into giving up his kingdom. Moved by Mahabali’s devotion and generosity, Vishnu granted him permission to visit his people once a year, which is celebrated as Onam.
